She used to say she'd wear purple, someday, she supposed when she got old
Doesn't admit to aging, doesn't think she's disabled, and refuses she's gotten that way
She rants about the these times we live in and all her many, many, .... many irritations
I listen as much to what she shares as to what she doesn't, not knowing just what to say
She's fun and funny and sarcastic and sassy and elegant and beautiful and cute
Refusing to listen to doctors, or neighbors, or my brothers or my sister or me
Knowing more than I'll ever be able to understand, than she'll ever be able to tell
Trying to focus through bi-focals, seeing only what her clouded vision allows her to see
Walker in hand, unsteady feet take one shaky step after another, one at a time
Frumpy comfy skirt, shirt, sweater, and more... She's dressed to the nines
Sees nothing wrong with wearing tennis shoes with her skirt, and purple gym socks too
That loving, moody, crazy, fashion disabled, dear to my heart, mother of mine!

Mary - What a wonderfully heartwarming poem about a unique and special Mom. Your writing style so beautifully captures her very essence, delightful. I guess you are familiar with the purple and red worn by the ladies of the Red Hat Society, the wonderful ladies who have decided that getting older simply means "let's have fun." Thanks for this, I really liked it.....June
OMG, Mary! I should have known who this was about after reading the title. What a fun and zany tribute to my sister! I loved it. You should email this to the family, they will all appreciate it! I always wanted to be just like her, but after reading this, I don't think I'm quite ready. lol It just wouldn't work where I work, if you know what I mean!
I've been enjoying several of your poems. I've noticed you're an expert at slipping in a word or two of humor (the right dose) here and there, usually when we least expect it. Classic story telling, I noticed, you truly mastered many years ago. Glad you take the time to share.
I love the illustration! Fashion for most, as Anthony said below, is more a state of mind than anything. Maybe that's why a good percentage of us girls (3-103) seem to have so much fun when creating it or talking about it? The planning part being the most fun.
You gotta love em! I use to see old men wearing dark socks with shorts and say,"Look at that idiot!" Now I know why, because life is for living the way you want within some rules. but not in the clothes you wear! Tell your mom I said," You go girl!" and that I love you both! Anthony
