What is poetry? Simply put, if it’s not prose, then it’s poetry. It is believed that poetry originated before written language and was used as a memory device. Rhyme and rhythm were essential. Since then poetry has evolved into a broad genre which includes many variations. Free verse is one form of poetry that doesn’t necessarily have a rhyme scheme or rhythm. However, free verse poetry often has either rhyme or rhythm. On our poetry help pages you can learn about and explore many of these features.
